Cherating’s fame as a beach destination began in the early 70’s when backpackers from all over the world gathered here for its pristine beaches.
Today, Cherating is quieter but it has not lost any of its charm. A beach that stretches as far as the eye can see, white sand, blue skies and the wind blowing from the South China Sea, one can simply spend the day idling watching the waves.
if you feel like exploring, take a boat trip up Cherating river and see the mangrove forest rich with unique species. Don’t miss to savour fresh seafood served at its many restaurants.

 

Kemaman (Cherating neighbouring town) is a quaint little town situated at the estuary of the Kemaman river. It is famed for its picturesque scenery of fishing villages (at Kuala Kemaman), seafood and coffee.
Kemaman coffee can be savoured at the local kopitiams (coffee shop). Do try the local seafood delicacy such as “satar, otak-otak and keropok lekor”.
If you are here in between April and August, you might have a chance to see or go squid fishing using bright lights. The sea is literally dotted withd lights form squid hunting boats.

 


SWIM OR SURF

LATE OCTOBER - END MARCH
During monsoon season, some of Malaysia's best surfing waves are here. A point break rolls across the bay with up to 2m waves and rides that could last up to 400m. Equipment could be rented at surf shops by the beach

SNORKELING TOURS

If you want to try snorkeling, we offer you a half-day snorkeling tours to the aptly named Coral Island. View the wondrous marine life in clear pristine waters.

THE TURTLE SANCTUARY

The turtle sanctuary has a few basins with hatchlings and rehabilitating green turtles. Tha centre offers information about the various species of turtles found on the shores of Malaysia. It is a right place to learn about turtle conservation.

TURTLE WATCHING

APRIL - LATE AUGUST

Witness turtles lay their eggs and freeing baby turtles to the sea. It always happens at night. If you're keen to join this activity, do make sure you keep your lights switched off. It would disorients the turtles as they struggle to return to the sea.

VISIT FISHERMAN VILLAGE AND KEMAMAN TOWN

Witness and experience life of a local fisherman in the village. You can go fishing, buy fresh seafood, built your own fibre boat and other fishery related activities. They could also arrange for you to cook your catch of the day.

You can take riding lessons in the paddock or go trotting along the beach. At the well-kept

MANGROVE RIVER CRUISE

This is an educational river cruise. A guide will steer quietly through the river which runs along a mangrove forest. Here you will spot wildlife such as squirrels, a few species of snakes and a family of jumping monkeys.

FIREFLY IBOK RIVER, KEMAMAN

A boat trip to Snake Island is where you can be adventurous. Here you can explore the small island, snorkel or just wonder at the many wildlife that makes this little island their home.

This place offers basic batik-making courses, for adult and children, where you can make your own batik handkerchief, scarf, sarong or even t-shirt. Take home your batik artwork as a momento of your trip.
